My Everything

March 1942, New York

“It's going to be fun, trust me!”
“I don't know...”

One of your best friends, Anna, guided you to an unknown place for you.
She just told you about a double date with two gentlemen.
You had no idea where she picked up all these guys for you.

As the both of you were walking down the streets of Brooklyn, you couldn't help yourself but feel nervous.
Anna brought the most handsome men to you, always trying to set you up with one of them.
Unfortunately, nothing did work out.

Either they were the most arrogant creatures on earth, just trying to get you in bed, or they didn't even notice you.
Sure, you were pretty, but nothing special. You knew that.

As the both of you reached the theater, you stopped by the entry and waited for your dates to show up.
Anna began to fumble on your dress, trying to put your (h/c) curls in a proper state.
“Stop that!” you scolded her giggling and slapped playfully at her hands.

“Sorry! I am just so excited!” she explained and sighed. “Believe me, even though Bucky’s friend is a little bit... extraordinary, he's just like you, (y/n).”
You raised an eyebrow and smiled. “Like what?”
“Kind.” she answered with such a serious voice that your breath caught for a couple of seconds.

Just as you were about to answer, you saw a man approaching your friend. “Anna! We are so sorry for being late, I hope you didn't wait to long?”
Anna turned around and smiled at the tall, handsome stranger. “Don't worry, we just got here, too.”

Then his eyes met yours. “So, you must be (y/n). My name is James Barnes, but you can call me Bucky.”
He ran his fingers through his brown hair and extended his other hand to you.
You smiled at him and exchanged a quick handshake. “It's nice to meet you, Bucky.”

You looked around, trying to find the other man Anna was talking about.
No one stood beside Bucky, it was just him.

But then, Bucky stepped aside, revealing someone behind him. “And this is my friend, Steven Rogers.”
You needed to look down to see the man that got hid by Bucky before.
He looked up to you with a tired expression, but still with a polite smile on his face. “Good evening, ma'am.”

First thing you noticed were his beautiful blue eyes, then his height.
He was really tiny and looked somehow fragile, his angelic face standing out.
You could clearly say Steve awaited a rejection.

Slowly nodding at him, you smiled. “Good evening.”
Steve seemed surprised, but tried to hide that quickly.

“Well, then.” Bucky announced with a huge grin and clapped his hands. “Shall we enter the theater? I can't wait to see the movie!”
With that he bowed before you girls. “After you.”
Anna and you giggled and quickly walked into the theater.

Bucky waited until the both of you disappeared, then he turned around to Steve and slapped him on his back. “Told you, someday.”
His smaller friend shook his head, but couldn't hide his smile either.

Him and Bucky followed you girls quickly and stood beside you in the waiting queue.
After getting the tickets and some treats – which got paid both by those marvelous men – the little group of you got to your seats.
First came Bucky, then Anna, then Steve and then you.

As you all waited for the movie to start, Bucky and Anna quickly got into a chat, leaving you and Steve in silence.
He tried to come up with a topic for your conversation, but only seeing you grabbing some popcorn made his knees weak.

He cleared his throat. “Would you like some nuts, Ma'am?”
Surprised, you looked down at his hand that was showing you his bag of nut mixture.
This gesture was something you had never seen before from a guy. Normally they'd steal your own food without even asking.
You blinked a few times, then smiled. “Yes, I would love that.”

Steve also smiled and passed you a couple of them.
You ate one quickly. “Thank you very much, Steven.”

His eyes locked with yours. “You're welcome. And you can call me Steve.”
The two of you couldn't help but gazing into each others eyes, entirely enchanted by the other.
Then the lights darkened and the movie started.

“It was really funny when this guy punched him in the face and he just laughed!” giggled Anna as the four of you exited the theater.
Bucky joined in her laughter. “You are right, that was hilarious!”

Steve and you followed them quietly.
You did not know what was going on with you!
This little guy made your heartbeat fasten and always wanting to check if your hair was still okay.
He made you nervous and aroused at the same time.

Many women would say he was too small, too weak to be a proper husband.
Somehow; however, you didn't care about that anymore.
Everything about him was different and... beautiful.

Bucky turned around to Steve and you. “So, guys, are you still up for a little drinking at this bar there?”
Anna nodded in agreement and linked arms with him.
You smiled politely and shook your head. “No, I need to go to bed. I'm on early shift tomorrow.”
“Oh, no, what a shame.” Bucky answered.

Your friend wanted to start talking you into it when suddenly, Steve blurted out. “I am going to walk you home.”
Bucky, Anna and you starred at him with a surprised expression, making him gulp. “Only... only if you want to, of course.”

You couldn't answer, you were too much stuck on your thoughts.
Anna hit her elbow slightly against you, making you snap out of your trance.
“O-Of course I want to! That would be very... kind of you.”

Bucky grinned and smacked Steve against his back again, eagerly to leave him and you alone. “Alright then. Have a good time.”
Anna and him quickly walked away and giggled the whole time, making you blush slightly.

Steve took a deep breath and offered his arm to you. “May we go now?”
You nodded and smiled down at him, linking your arm with his.

The both of you walked through the nightly city, not saying a word to each other.
You felt incredible nervous, just like him.
Still, you walked very slow, trying to spent time with each other as long as possible.

Sadly, the walk didn't last forever and you reached your apartment.
Steve and you stood in front of your door, both looking shyly at the ground.
You fumbled with your keys and an awkward silence lingered.

Sometime you cleared your throat and decided to end this situation. “Well, uh... thank you so much for walking me home, Steve.”
You felt his gaze on you but couldn't overcome your shyness to look back at him.
“It was my pleasure, ma'am.”

Finally you managed to meet his gaze. “No need for courtesies. You can just call me (y/n), Steve.”
Steve smiled awkwardly, now him looking at the ground. “Alright... (y/n).”

As his wonderful voice said your name, something clicked inside you.
Out of a sudden outburst of courage, you leaned down and pressed your lips at this cheek.

His eyes widened as he felt your soft lips in a tender kiss on his skin.
Both of your heartbeats increased and you stumbled back, smiling like an idiot.

“I-I have to go now, goodnight!” you stuttered, embarrassed by your abrupt act.
You wanted to get into your apartment as fast as possible and already unlocked the door when his voice held you back.
“Wait!”

You turned around with burning cheeks, seeing his dreamy smile. “Will I see you again?”
A smile formed on your lips. “I would love to.”

Then you got in, slowly closing the door. “Have a safe walk, Steve. Good night.”
His blue eyes sparkled. “Good night, (y/n).”

June 1943, New York

Raindrops fell from the greyish sky as you ran through the crowds of people.
You wanted to get to your apartment as fast as possible.

You were in hurry because your friend Anna had just told you, that her neighbor Lucy got a letter from her boyfriend.
And that meant that there was a letter waiting in the letter box for you, too.

You cursed as you almost slipped into a puddle, but managed to prevent that in the very nick of time.

After a couple of minutes of running, you finally reached your home.

Anna was right.
There was a new letter in your letter box.

You almost ripped that letter out and searched for the sender.
“Camp Lehigh
Steven G. Rogers”

A squeal escaped your lips and you jogged to your apartment, quickly unlocking and entering it.
You didn't even make the effort to change your wet clothes, you just flopped down on your couch and opened the letter.

You couldn't wait to read the words of your beloved boyfriend.

Steve and you were together since your second date at a diner.
You loved each other madly and you always managed to defeat the ups and downs.
And you have had plenty of them.

As Steve got recruited finally, one of your worst nightmares came true.
Don't get that wrong, you knew it was his dream to serve his country, and you were happy he finally had the chance to do so.

But the problem was... this terrible war could get him killed.
And that was something you wouldn't survive either.

As you finished the letter, you felt a hollow feeling in your stomach.
You didn't know what to think about it.
Sure, it was good news, but something scared you somehow.

You looked down, reading the most important words again.

“I got chosen for Project Rebirth.”

October 1943, Chicago

“Who's strong and brave, here to save the American Way?
Who vows to fight like a man for what's right night and day?
Who will campaign door-to-door for America,
carry the flag shore to shore for America,
from Hoboken to Spokane?
The Star Spangled Man with a Plan!”

Steve appeared on the stage and smiled at the people, saluting.
All the showgirls began to dance and sing louder around him, presenting an astonishing show.
Their performance was great and everyone cheered and screamed.

You were standing amongst the crowd and watched your boyfriend with a sad expression.
On the outside he looked totally happy, but you knew better than that.
This was everything but his dream.

Well, he was a super soldier now.
Tall, masculine, strong – the exact opposite from before.

At first, you didn't believe it was him as he made a surprise visit to you.
Who could have blamed you? It was a big difference after all.

The show ended with Steve lifting a motorcycle ridden by the showgirls.
Everyone applauded and got off of their seats.
You smiled and got up, too.
You couldn't wait to finally have him all by yourself.

Steve had invited you to accompany him on the famous “Captain America’s USO Shows” tour.
Of course you agreed. You missed him dearly while he was in Camp Lehigh.
This was your chance to spend more time with him.
At least that's what you thought it would have been.

Steve exited the stage and was surrounded by people immediately.
You walked towards him, carefully stepping aside so that more people could get a photo of the Captain.

And just like always, you had to clear the way for seductive women, too.

They hugged him without asking and clung onto him, giving him kisses on his cheeks. Almost every day.
Steve was constantly overwhelmed by their affection and didn't exactly know how to respond.

You couldn't help but feel jealous now and then.
Sure, he was your boyfriend after all.
The thing is, that...

They were all so beautiful.
And Steve was now overly attractive.
You feared that someday, one of this gorgeous women would get to him.
That he would fall in love with her and leaving you.

You shook your head and took a deep breath.
You just couldn't do this anymore. You couldn't move from city to city watching him getting kissed by pretty ladies anymore.

You quickly got back to your hotel room and packed your things.
As you were done, you sat onto your shared bed with Steve and waited for him to come.

You waited for hours, but he didn't show up.
He didn't came back until three a.m., completely tired then and with several red lipstick kisses on his cheek.
“I am so sorry I couldn't be back sooner, but...” he began, but stopped when he saw you nearly crying with your packed suitcases.

“(y/n)?” he asked quietly.

As soon as you saw him, a few tears finally escaped your eyes. “I can't do this anymore, Steve.”
He slowly let his mask fall onto the bed. “I... the tour is almost over. We could...”

You shook your head and got up. “It's not the tour, Steve. It's this! I-I... That's not me, Steve. This show, this superficially life.
I can't smile all day pretending that everything is fine.”
Steve quickly got to you. “I know, (y/n), I know! I don't like this either!”

He caressed your face with his hands, carefully brushing your tears away. “We just need to hold  on. After we finished the show for the soldiers on the front line...”
“Then what?” you interrupted him with a trembling voice. “Then everything goes back to normal? You know that's not going to work.”
“I'm gonna make it work!” he exclaimed and felt his eyes sting. “Please, (y/n)...”

You smiled broken and wiped away one of the lipstick kisses. “These are never going to end, too.”
Steve noticed what you meant and took a deep breath. “You know I don't care about them. I only love you.”
“Yes, now you love me. But someday...” you whispered and pulled yourself out of his grip.

You held back a whimper. “Back then, you took me because you had no other choice. Now you can get the most beautiful woman, the most talented and enchanting one.”
Steve stumbled back, as if your words had hurt him physically. “Tha-... That's not true and you know it.”

“I understand. Really, I do. I'm nothing compared to them.”
Suddenly, Steve’s desperation got endlessly and he burst out. “You are my everything!”

You quickly grabbed your suitcases, ready to leave the room. “You were mine, too.”
Steve didn't brought another word out, his skin now as pale as fresh snow.

You trembled as you walked towards him and gave him one last kiss on his cheek, coincidentally at the same spot like the first time.
“I love you, Steven Grant Rogers.”

And when the door closed behind you, tears began to fell inside the hotel room.

March 4th, 1945, New York

You hummed to the song that got played on the radio, preparing yourself some dinner.
The noodles were almost done cooking and you were hungry like a wolf.
You gently stirred them and looked for the sauce.

Since your broke up with Steve almost two years ago, you had become a different person.
You weren't that sweetly, shy girl anymore.
Instead of that you were living a withdrawn life, barely talking to anyone.

You hadn't seen him ever since, you just knew he was finally serving his country properly.
No more shows.

Even though much time had passed, your feelings for him hadn't change.
You still loved him as much as at the first day.

As your meal was ready, you quickly served everything on a plate and took a seat at your dining table.

Just as you were about to take the first bite, the doorbell rang.
You paused and frowned.
Who could possibly visit you at a such unappropriated time?

You got up and walked through your apartment, opening the front door. “Yes?”

You found two men in front on you. They were wearing uniforms and looked at you with a sad expression.

Your heartbeat increased and your knees got weak.
Instantly you knew, you just didn't want to believe it.
But then, the words were spoken.

“We are sorry to inform you that Steven Rogers is missing in action.”

A sober escaped your lips and you felt yourself fall.
One of the men caught you and began to talk to you, but you couldn't hear him anymore.

You couldn't speak anymore.
You couldn't see anymore.
You couldn't breathe anymore.

Everything was just... numb.

Several Years Later

Arnim Zola walked away from his new experiment, “Project Winter Soldier”, and entered the conference room of the HYDRA base.

Three soldiers were waiting for him in there. As Zola approached them, he saw a body which got covered by a blanket lying on one of the tables.
“Is that her?” he asked and took a note.

One of the HYDRA soldiers nodded. “Yes, Sir. She tried to kill herself twice. We managed to always safe her just in time.”

Zola lifted the blanket a little bit, revealing some (h/c) hair.
He nodded approvingly. “Excellent. Bring her to my lab.”

“Hail HYDRA!” the soldiers called out and quickly brought the body away.

Zola took another note.
“Project 'Miss Winter' starts.”
